Ongoing projects
Restoration of the Grand Théâtre
An iconic monument of Verviers' heritage, the Grand Théâtre is currently being restored to become a leading contemporary cultural centre. It will have a capacity of 1,000 seats in the main auditorium and 450 seats in the two other auditoriums. This project, financed by the public authorities, has a budget of nearly £49 million. It is scheduled to reopen in 2028 and will greatly contribute to the vibrancy and attractiveness of the city centre.
Library
The Verviers library has undergone an ambitious modernisation programme to become a true cultural hub 2.0, open, accessible and connected. The project involves the creation of redesigned spaces: a modern media library, a digital public space, user-friendly areas and a room for students, while enhancing the collections and digital resources.
At the same time, the building has been completely refurbished, renovated and optimised: energy improvements targeting 35% savings, electrical and fire safety upgrades, asbestos removal and improved accessibility for people with reduced mobility.
A comprehensive transformation to make the library an unmissable place where culture, technology and community come together in the heart of Verviers.
The investment amounts to €4.8 million, of which €3.3 million is subsidised.
Work began in 2024 and will be completed in March 2026.
Youth, Association and Citizens' Centre (MAJAC)
The project involves the construction of a youth, community and citizens' centre. The aim is to bring together local institutions that promote youth development on a single site and to provide a dedicated facility for associations working in the socio-cultural, lifelong learning and equal opportunities sectors, as well as for citizens and neighbourhood committees.
Work is currently underway and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026 at a cost of €4.71 million. The project will then be completed with the construction of a skatepark and a multi-sports ground.
Renovation of the Conservatoire
The City of Verviers is undertaking a major project to transform and extend the Conservatory (music, spoken arts, dance), with the aim of modernising this centr al cultural facility. The programme includes the energy renovation of the building, the reconstruction of annexes, and the addition of a new extension and a footbridge.
This intervention will result in a more efficient, sustainable and inclusive Conservatory, in line with current standards, improving accessibility, user comfort and energy efficiency, for a budget of nearly €10 million. Work is expected to begin in 2027 and be completed in 2029.
New administrative centre
The new administrative centre project aims to modernise and bring together all the municipal administration services in a single building, located in the heart of the city. Ultimately, this operation will also free up several buildings (Place du Marché, Sommeleville, etc.), paving the way for significant opportunities for redevelopment and urban enhancement.
The works contract has been launched. Construction is scheduled to start at the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027. The future administrative centre will house all services and nearly 450 staff on a single site, promoting better coordination and more efficient service to citizens.
The cost of the project is €34.8 million. The move is expected to take place at the end of 2029.
